Sustainable plastic free community

Sustainable plastic free community

Encourage all participants ~ residents, visitors and workers ~ to adopt the principles of Plastic Free Eastbourne

Points

Difficult to encourage people to change habits, especially since they have been established since the 70s by the plastics industry.

If plastic waste can be not only reduced, but mostly recycled/repurposed within Eastbourne itself, then a whole new local industry would be created, thereby helping the town's economic recovery from the pandemic as well as helping fo reduce the carbon emissions involved in transporting the plastic waste far outside the town.

We need 'plastic waste to energy' sites in Eastbourne at sites with high levels of contaminated/dirty plastic waste (the plastic that can't be recycled), such as at the DGH. Local companies like CTEC (https://www.ctecenergy.co.uk/) can do this.

Reduce single use plastics in our environment. The greater the visiblity of this campaign, the greater the community response. This is an integral element of our town's ambition: "working towards a carbon neutral town by 2030". Pollution is reduced, waste is eliminated, community spirit is enhanced, sustainability is developed, manufacturers and commercial activities are forced to adapt to sustainable principles due to reduced demand for single-use debris.

Introduce a deposit on all plastic bottles so on return the supermarkets collect them to be recycled/reused. This should reduce plastic litter.

We are going to be reviving our businesses, organisations and places of work. We need a protocol of best practice to do with plastic free normality. Something like a kitemark would be useful for everyone to understand how best to achieve this. Examples could include: pubs and inns ~ beer mugs outside should be made of re-usabe plastic with a deposit for returning to be sterilised for next use. Single-use alternatives should be rejected. One pub could act as a role model for others to follow.
