Understanding relation of alternative styles of analysis

Understanding relation of alternative styles of analysis

There's lively debate about the relation between formal and discursive analysis. In my view the former should be enveloped in the latter. We need to use words to explain how we formulate and use formal analysis. This is the way it was until the 1980s. But others disagree. Students should be exposed to and understand the issues, rather than have them assumed for them as they are currently in the standard teaching.
