I propose a plan to make our roads safe and to bring down mortality from road traffic accidents to zero. Zero tolerance to use of mobile phones while driving. Strict speed limits. Resurfacing of roads with clear road signs. Points system with penalties that lead to deduction of points and eventual withdrawal of driving license for serous contraventions like overspeeding, drink driving and use of mobile. Strict police surveillance on the roads. More intense traffic education...let's save lives!
In addition to much stricter enforcement of the existing laws, we desperately need laws regarding minimum 'breathing room' when overtaking. Time and time again out on my bike someone in a car passes me at high speed with barely 50cm to spare - and in the eyes of the law, it's only a problem when an incident finally happens! Really, sometimes it's terrifying.
